HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie boys muzzle Jacksboro
The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team bounced back in a big way with a 74-32 victory over homestanding Jacksboro in District 3A-9 action on Tuesday evening.
Nine different Bowie players scored, with Jeffery Howard leading the way. Howard tossed in 17 points, including 3-of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc and 7-of-10 free-throw makes.
Trace Hardee also scored in double digits with 10, and Gary Mosley had his best game to date with seven points. Zeke Vaughan added eight points, and Taylor Pigg and Chase Hall also scored seven each.
Bowie, coming off a tough home loss to Nocona on Jan. 8, improved to 12-10 overall and 3-1 in District 3A-9. The Jackrabbits are in second spot all by their lonesome, looking up at front-runner Henrietta.
GIRLS: Brady’s 15 lifts Bowie girls
The fifth-ranked Bowie High School girls’ basketball team held off Jacksboro 48-38 in District 3A-9 play on Tuesday evening.
Courtney Brady finished the game as the leading scorer with 15 points, and she had five rebounds. River Romine chipped in with 12 points and four steals.
Jacksboro is coached by former Bowie Independent School District coach Todd Matlock.
The Lady Rabbits, ranked in the top-10 of two state polls, improved to 18-6 overall and an unbeaten 6-0 in the district.
Bowie outscored Jacksboro 18-3 in the opening quarter, but Jacksboro closed that margin to single digits by the end of three 36-27. Read more in The Bowie News.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
