STORM CENTER: Total recall for ’74
Recently, Bowie High School recognized one of its brightest athletic achievements ever with a ceremony honoring the 1974 state boys’ basketball champions.
There’s a reason why the current Jackrabbit players wear a No. 42 on their T-shirts because it’s been that long since Bowie copped a state title on the boys’ side.
In a couple of weeks, there will be a ceremony to honor the 1995 state champion girls’ squad.
Many people from that 1974 team returned for a reception and ceremony during halftime of the girls’ game between Bowie and Nocona.
There also was an auction for a quilt and basketball, won by Verna Mae Brashear and her husband, Bobbie, whose son Bobbie Jr. was on the ’74 state champions.
Bowie had a remarkable season, compiling a record of 25-5 including the Conference 2A state title game victory over Friona 76-66.
“They were all complete players,” then Bowie head coach Gayno Shelton said. “They were all a threat to score, and they all played sound defense. We really didn’t have any weaknesses.”
Shelton, who had 19 playoff teams in 30 seasons at Bowie, said the 1974 state champions showed the resolve to win a title.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
