STORM CENTER: Valley was tops around here in ’68

Published

on

Prairie Valley High School reminisced about the distant past last Friday as the school celebrated its 1968 state boys’ basketball championship tournament team.
Head coach Tom Foster returned to a heroes’ welcome.
“This was a group of kids that developed and played a lot of basketball,” said Foster, who is now retired and living in Georgetown, an Austin suburb.
Foster said the Bulldogs overcame adversity. Prairie Valley has always been a small school, and the state representatives didn’t feature much height.
The Prairie Valley 1968 state representatives featured the following players: No. 12 Frank Glass, No. 50 Wayne Sappington, No. 22 Johnny Pigg, No. 42 Elton Burleson, No. 24 Sam Tompkins, No. 34 Doug Weaver, No. 14 Steve Brown, No. 10 Larry Womack and No. 44 Ricky Pittman.
James Carpenter and Henry Meyers served as the managers. O.C. Mann was Prairie Valley’s superintendent at the time.
Glass and Sappington were starting centers, Burleson was a forward and guards were Brown and Tompkins. Weaver was the first player off the bench. Read more of this column in the Feb. 13 Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
