OUTDOORS: Zebra mussels infest more regional lakes

Published

on

Three more Texas lakes have been added to the list affected by zebra mussels, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports.
Lake Livingston, Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth all tested positive for zebra mussels.
This is why the TPWD has been proactive with a campaign called, “Clean, Drain and Dry.”
Boaters are reminded to clean, drain and dry their boats, trailers and gear every time they travel from one lake to another to prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other invasive species.
Sampling funded by the Trinity River Authority conducted on Lake Livingston June 22-23 by the United States Geological Survey has confirmed the presence of zebra mussels.
Four adult zebra mussels attached to the settlement samplers deployed at three different locations.
The Tarrant Regional Water District has monitored Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth for the presence of zebra mussels as well.
Both lakes are downstream of Lake Bridgeport, which is known to be infested.
Plankton samples collected on May 18 found what appeared to be zebra mussel larvae. The TPWD later confirmed those specimens through genetic analysis.
Additional monitoring on June 28 resulted in finding several adult zebra mussels in both lakes.
Zebra mussels were first found in Texas in 2009, with six lakes fully infested – meaning they have an established, reproducing population. Read more in the July 13 Bowie News.

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
