Commissioners propose cutting staff to make budget shortfall

By BARBARA GREEN
Facing a revenue shortfall of $110,572 and in an effort to keep the tax rate at the effective rate of .5097 cents the Montague County Commissioners began talking staff cuts in Monday’s budget workshop.
The certified property values arrived late last week and as expected the county values took a big hit dropping 15.27 percent from the 2015 values. While real property roses slightly, mineral values fell by 33.29 percent.
As the workshop opened, County Judge Rick Lewis said while they are still crunching the figures based on the values the revenue shortfall is projected at $110,572. That amount will have to be cut from the proposed budget if the county wants to move forward with a balanced budget.
The court did get some good news last week when the Texas Association of Counties, which provides health insurance reported only a two percent increase in the premiums for the new year. Montague County also learned it will be grandfathered in based on the type of plan it maintains which will provide about a $67,000 rebate.

Nocona City Council approves NEDC requests

The Nocona City Council approved a trio of Nocona Economic Development Corporation requests and considered infrastructure work questioned by a city council.
Councilors met on June 10. Two of the NEDC requests had already been presented with the timeclock for comment started. With that time limit over, the requests were finalized.
The Type A and B Boards will spend $19,225 at the Indian Oaks Golf Club for equipment, aerifying and top dressing the greens and batteries for rental carts. It also will expend $20,000 to the Nocona Chisholm Trail Rodeo Arena Committee to build new concrete bleachers, railings, fence and platform.
The third NEDC request is a new one related to a Type B board loan of $200,000 to Amy and Chris Nunneley for a new apartment and office construction project.
