STORM CENTER: College football opens

Published

on

And so it begins. The college football season is upon us, and you could tell that just by looking at the Pigskin Picks contest from earlier this week.
Your slate of games features many of the most-talked about match-ups heading into the opening week.
And Week One games are already in the books, having taken place on Thursday.
Locally, Midwestern State University football opens the season on the road at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3.
Who’s the opponent? Truman State, which is based in Kirksville, Mo. This school was once known as Northeast Missouri State until changing its name to honor former United States president Harry S. Truman.
Midwestern State has some degree of expectation this season. After all, the Mustangs came in ranked 14th in the American Football Coaches’ Association preseason Division II poll.
MSU lost only two games last season, and head coach Bill Maskill has the team primed for another successful campaign.
The biggest question in my mind is who replaces Marqui Christian as the leader of the defense now that Christian is playing for the Arizona Cardinals.
The Mustangs should field one of the deepest groups of wide receivers at the Div. II level in the entire country.
Here’s a group of famous alumni from Truman State, basketball Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin, boxer Ken Norton, former major league baseball pitcher Al Nipper and Glenn Jacobs. Yes, that Glenn Jacobs who plays Kane on WWE programming.
The hype machine is already cranking out that this will supposedly be “the greatest opening weekend in college football history.”
Preseason No. 1 Alabama will be facing No. 20 USC at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Amazingly enough, the Crimson Tide are currently a double-digit favorite to win the game.
Is that how great the chasm is between the elites and mid-tier teams today? I’m just wondering about that out loud. Read more from this column in the Sept. 3 Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

There were four age categories with five events to compete in for the young athletes.
Along with the best results in each event, at the end the overall best cowboy and cowgirl in each age division was awarded as well.
The lead line division, in which an adult helps the young competitors, saw Rylee Stewart win the first in poles, barrel racing and mystery event on her way to win top cowgirl.
Hattie Snow got the fastest time in the flags event and Lany Shupak got the fastest goat time. Riggin Bishop got named the top cowboy in the division.
In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
