HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Bears, Panthers earn first wins

The Gold-Burg High School football program snapped a losing streak that dated back to the 2014 season with a win
on Friday.
The Bears topped Harrold on the road, 40-6, as Gold-Burg faced a Hornets’ team that was pretty much as depleted as they
are.
“This was our first win, and we are hungry for more,” said head coach Jay Johnson, who noted during Friday’s game players
were emotional after the victory.
P l a y e r s t h a n k e d Johnson for sticking by their side, especially as the 18 straight losses mounted and players
defected to other schools.
This was Gold-Burg’s first win since a Sept. 26, 2014, conquest over Founders Classical Academy.
Gold-Burg will face a Northside team that’s also standing at 1-3 this Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Savoy (0-4) at Saint Jo (1-3)
Saint Jo also is looking for a winning steak as the Panthers are coming off a convincing 70-13 victory over Northside.
“The kids deserved it,” said head coach Chad Tallon. “They have been working hard, and we’ve had great practices.”
This is Homecoming week in Saint Jo, but
Tallon doesn’t expect that to impact the Panthers.
“I think the kids are too young to worry about Homecoming,”
he said. “I think we’ll do a good job of avoiding distractions.”
Tallon made a change game with Northside.
Blake Anderson was shifted to quarterback and Preston Lyons to spread back.
“We want to be able to move Preston around,” Tallon said.
Anderson finished the game with 129 yards rushing and he was 5-of-6 for 134 yards. He had five touchdowns overall.
