BASEBALL: Workman having strong season

Published

on

Could former Bowie High School standout pitcher Brandon Workman be on his way back to Boston?
Soon, if the Pawtucket PawSox pitcher continues throwing the way he did in Wednesday’s 4-0 victory.
Workman earned his first hold of the season, pitching two scoreless innings and recording five strikeouts.
He threw 26 pitches, with 19 of them for strikes (73 percent).
Workman has walked one and allowed one hit while striking out 10 in seven innings of work so far during the 2017 season. Opposing batters are hitting just .048 against Brandon.
It’s another positive step for Workman, who is nearly two years removed from Tommy John surgery.
According to a report by Christopher Smith from Masslive.com, Red Sox manager John Farrell reported Workman has experienced a “slight uptick in velocity.” Brandon was throwing in the high-80s during spring training.
Farrell complimented him in other areas, especially with how consistent his curveball has been.
“That is the one pitch that has taken probably even more of a step forward than what we saw in spring training,” Farrell told Smith. “He’s gradually putting himself right back in the mix to be a strong candidate here.”
The city of Bowie had a Brandon Workman Day in appreciation of his performance in the 2013 World Series. He pitched a scoreless inning in Game Six to propel the Boston Red Sox to the title over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
