Nocona High School’s boys, which finished top-10 at the tournament last year, didn’t fare as well in 2017. The Indians were 1-3 in Pool Two; but, they won twice in bracketed play.
The Indians suffered a tough 45-44 loss to Salado during Pool One action, with their lone win over Waxahachie Life. Nocona topped Kemp and Bay City before Bowie eliminated the Indians.
“The TBC is an opportunity for the kids to represent their school in the summertime,” said Nocona coach Bret Botard, with Brad Breeze as head coach for the team.
Nocona’s roster featured all-region player Riley McCasland and sixth man most valuable player Charles Evans plus first-team selection Jose Ogeda and second-team honoree Cade Breeze.
Other Indians on the roster are promising Jason Sparkman, Kade Hilton, Joan Gomez, Hunter Fenoglio, Adan Delao and Carter Horn.
Overall, Nocona was 3-4 – and the Indians are winding down offseason activities with two more rounds of summer league games in Lindsay.
The team qualified for the state tournament based on its performance at Denton Braswell earlier in the spring. Read more in the June 28 Bowie News.
Playing in the post was a chore during the game between Bowie and Nocona on Sunday morning at Grapevine High School. (Top) Nocona’s Cade Breeze scores on Dillon Swaim, and he draws the foul in the process.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
