HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Rabbits take TBC boys’ 3A-4A title

It was fitting the Texas Basketball Championships Summer State Tournament Conference 3A-4A championship game pitted district rivals against each other.
The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team squared off against Holliday in a showdown featuring these District 3A-8 opponents.
As has been the case in recent years, and thanks in part of a late Justin Franklin layup and Jackrabbits making free throws down the stretch, Bowie got the best of Holliday 52-44 for the title on Sunday at Colleyville Heritage High School.
The Jackrabbits ran the table for the entire tournament – which included a pair of wins over Conference 4A Burkburnett and a 16-point conquest over another district rival in Nocona. In all, Bowie won nine games without a loss.
“It was a good time,” said Bowie head coach Doug Boxell.
(Boxell is unable to coach the team on the floor according to University Interscholastic League rules, so Elton Johnson served as head coach.)
“The kids have worked hard in the spring and summer, and something special happened for us,” said Boxell, whose Bowie squad has state tournament aspirations with the return of a healthy Jeffery Howard.
Boxell was especially impressed with the pair of wins over Burkburnett, 55-51 in pool play, and then 54-39 in the bracketed tournament finals.
The Bowie High School boys basketball team celebrates as the Conference 3A-4A champion from June 25 at Colleyville Heritage High School. The Jackrabbits won all nine games, including the title game 52-44 over District 3A-8 rival Holliday.
