The Forestburg High School volleyball team will certainly embark on a new era in 2017.
The Lady Horns will move on without graduated middle blocker Hope Phipps and outside hitter Haley Nolan. But, third-year coach Cori Hayes remains confident.
“We lost two girls that were a vital part of previous teams,” Hayes said. “But, we still have Lexi (Alexia Britain). I think we will be able to compete. We will still be there.”
Forestburg is coming off another season as a playoff qualifier with a record of 22-12, 9-5 in District 2A-10.
Alexia Britain was named co-defensive player of the year in 2A-10 along with Christina Arevalo, the ex-libero at Gold-Burg. Phipps had been the co-offensive player of the year along with Tioga’s Nicole Hill.
Because the team is committed to working at the Forestburg Watermelon Festival on Aug. 12, Hayes reported the Lady Horns will participate in a one-day tournament at Bryson the day before.
Forestburg will then play at Alvord on Aug. 15 before heading to the Chico Tournament from Aug. 17-19.
Other non-district matches are against Savoy (Aug. 22) and Graford (Aug. 25) at home, and at Bryson on Aug. 29.
Savoy is now coached by Kristi Tallon, who was most recently at Saint Jo. Chelsea Kincaid, a former Bowie standout, is entering her second season coaching Bryson. Read more, and see the complete schedule, in the July 15 Bowie News.
Forestburg’s Alexia Britain (4) plays at the net against a player from Dodd City during the Conference 1A-Region III playoffs at Lindsay High School. Dodd City eliminated the Lady Horns from the playoffs in 2016. Britain is expected to play a pivotal role on the team with Hope Phipps and Haley Nolan now graduated. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
