Montague County tax rate may go up almost a nickel

Montague County Commissioners plan nearly a nickel increase to the tax rate after receiving the certified property values in a called meeting Thursday afternoon.
County Tax Assessor Collector Syd Nowell presented the certification of values and rates for 2017 Thursday.
Certified net values are $1,812,837,530 with rolling railroad stock of $11,930,173 for a total of $1,824,767,703. The values fall $14,800,397 below last year’s, which totaled $1,839,568,100.
The effective tax rate, which is the amount needed to generate the same tax revenue as last year, is 0.5172 cents per $100 in property value.
The rollback rate for maintenance and operation is 0.5399 with a debt rate of .0173. The total rollback rate equals 0.5572 per $100 value.
County Judge Rick Lewis recommended a 55 cent tax rate, a 6.13 percent increase over the effective rate.

City staff examines new generators for water plant

City of Bowie officials were on hand to inspect the emergency electrical generators that were delivered last week.
Mayor Gaylynn Burris and City Manager Bert Cunningham inspected one of three emergency electrical generators purchased as part of an ongoing Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant. They also talked with Jay Evans, head of the city electric department, and Jerry Sutton, director of the water treatment plant about the next step for installation of the generators.
This grant provides funding for one 150 kW and two 250 kW generators for use at the water treatment plant.
