With six days left to file as a candidate for the Nov. 7 city and school elections, the Bowie City Council has received its first two candidates running for mayor and council.
Bill Miller has filed for the east precinct presently filled by Wayne Bell. Late Friday, Gaylynn Burris filed to run for mayor.
Miller and his wife retired to Bowie 10 years ago. He spent 27 years in the U.S. Navy and then went into the IT field and corporate management. He is a member of the planning and zoning commission. Burris was appointed a little more than a month ago to fill the vacancy when Scott Davis was named mayor.
There are three places open for election on the council, plus mayor.
Jim Graham serves the north precinct and Chuck Malone the south precinct. Scott Davis was named mayor a few months back following the resignation of Larry Slack in May.
Filing for the ballot continues through Aug. 21.
The Saint Jo School Board has all three of its incumbents filed: Rebecca Harris, Jeff Pledger and Scott Thomas.
No candidates have filed for the Bowie School Board election. There are three places on that ballot filled by: Kevin Polk, place five; Kevin Roth, place six and Brenda Ogle, place seven.
The Saint Jo City Council also has no filings for its three aldermen positions filled by: Paul Mouring, Stephanie West and Bryan Wolf.

City of Bowie officials were on hand to inspect the emergency electrical generators that were delivered last week.
Mayor Gaylynn Burris and City Manager Bert Cunningham inspected one of three emergency electrical generators purchased as part of an ongoing Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant. They also talked with Jay Evans, head of the city electric department, and Jerry Sutton, director of the water treatment plant about the next step for installation of the generators.
