Montague County Commissioners will conduct the first public hearing on the proposed tax rate of 55 cents for the 2017-2018 budget at 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 14.
The effective tax rate, which is the amount needed to generate the same tax revenue as last year, is 0.5172 cents per $100 in property value. The rollback rate for maintenance and operation is 0.5399 with a debt rate of .0173. The total rollback rate equals 0.5572 per $100 value.
County Judge Rick Lewis recommended a 55 cent tax rate, a 6.13 percent increase over the effective rate. The new rate will increase by .4903 cents from the 2016 rate of .5097.
A regular meeting will follow, which will be wrapped up by a budget workshop.
Commissioners also will consider a National Registry of Historical Places number for the 104-year-old courthouse.
County leaders began pursuing the designation in an effort to assist with resolving violations found during a July 2016 fire inspection. In May, county leaders received word the application had passed the Texas Historical Commissioner Review Board and was being sent to the National Park Service for consideration.

City of Bowie officials were on hand to inspect the emergency electrical generators that were delivered last week.
Mayor Gaylynn Burris and City Manager Bert Cunningham inspected one of three emergency electrical generators purchased as part of an ongoing Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant.
