Montague County is now officially a “Purple Heart County,” following the acceptance of a proclamation for Oct. 22 as Purple Heart Day.
Officials from the national organization Military Order of the Purple Heart offered the proclamation to the commissioner’s court on Monday. John Lunkoicz, state commander for the department of Texas MOPH, thanked the court for its consideration. The commander was an infantryman in Vietnam.
The purpose of the recognition is to honor and remember all Montague County Purple Heart recipients, living or dead, as well as all veterans in the county. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to American military members. After approving the proclamation, Commissioner Mark Murphey asked those attending to rise and applaud these service members.
