Bowie, Nocona ready community Thanksgiving meals

Published

on

Bowie and Nocona will serve community dinners on Thanksgiving Day for those looking for a holiday meal or some fellowship.
In Bowie, the dinner will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 22 at the First United Methodist Church, 1515 North Jefferson. Last year organizers reported serving about 300 people both in-house and delivery or pickup.
Delivery and take-out meals will be available. Orders will be accepted until noon on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Call the church office at 872-3384 to place an order or to make a reservation. There is no charge for dinner.
Christ Community Church in Nocona will coordinate the community dinner for the 15th year. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veranda Inn Event Center. There is no charge.
Those wanting to reserve a meal or have one delivered can call 531-1885. Coordinator Belinda Hendrix said they will even try to accommodate anyone needing a dinner the day of the event.
Last year there were 435 meals delivered or picked up, while another 250 were served in-house.
Volunteers are welcome to come help with the meal, and the event is always in need of cash donations and cooked turkeys, as well as sides and deserts.
“We don’t turn anything away,” said Hendrix. “If you want to come and work, show up and we will find a job for you. We have plenty of people who come from McKinney, Allen and even Oklahoma City to help. It has become a family tradition for many, they will work and when they get a break they will sit down and have their meal together.”

July Jam planned for July 27

Published

on

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.

Published

on

The Nocona City Council met this past week making plans for budget and tax rate hearings.
Councilors received a brief update on the 2024-25 budget preparations. City Secretary Revell Hardison said the final proposal is almost complete and they now await the arrival of the no-new revenue tax rate that will be reviewed by the council after it is calculated by the tax collector.

The proposal includes a tax rate increase of about 3% similar to last year and there will be a small increase in water and sewer rates, but Hardison said the final crunch on those will come after the tax rate projections arrive.
