Jackrabbits beat feisty Bearcats 49-40 at home improving to 3-1
The Bowie Jackrabbits were able to secure the team’s first home district win Tuesday night as they took on Henrietta.
Despite the Bearcats having no answer for Bowie’s players inside, the Jackrabbits less than stellar outside shooting allowed the final score to be 49-40.
The first quarter was relatively slow offensively for both teams. With a little less than three minutes to go, Bowie only led 6-3. The Jackrabbits were able to end the quarter well by doubling their score and leading 12-5.
The second quarter was more of the same, except no momentous push came from either team’s offense. To counteract Bowie’s strength of size and skill in the post, the Bearcats sat back in a tight two-three zone and dared the Jackrabbits to take good three-point shots.
While the Jackrabbits have had moments where the team has been on fire from deep, they have not shot a good percentage on the year and were not having their best night Tuesday.
The two teams each scored only six points in the second quarter as Bowie led 18-11 at halftime.
The pace picked up in the second half and especially in the third quarter. The Jackrabbits started pushing the ball and were able to finish several two on one and three on two situations with guard Justin Franklin getting his teammates easy looks to score as he dished out a season high 11 assists in the game.
Henrietta made enough shots from three while scoring through gritty means to keep pace. While Bowie did go up by double digits 32-21 with 3:30 to play in the third, the Bearcats closed the score to 36-28 heading into the fourth quarter, refusing to go away.
In fourth quarter Henrietta’s Jonah Lyde, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored 11 of his game high 18 points with a couple of three-pointers and getting to the free throw line. The Jackrabbits scored and played just well enough not to feel threatened even as the Bearcats cut the lead to 43-39 with 3:06 left to play.
Bowie takes awhile to run its offense under normal circumstances, but when trying without actually stalling, only the most aggressive of teams have succeeded in rattling the Jackrabbits with the lead.
Bowie was able to stay calm and play the game out normally as they won 49-40.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach
Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona softball falls to Archer City
Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.
The Lady Indians took a quick lead but the Lady ‘Cats had too much in the tank and knocked Nocona out of the playoffs courtesy of a 13-3, five-inning victory winning the best of three series, 2-0.
Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.
Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district
Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
