Bowie girls compete at state meet on Friday at Extraco

Published

on

The girl’s state powerlifting meet is happening this weekend at the Extraco Events Center in Waco.
In Montague County, five lifters from Bowie qualified for the state meet back on March 2 at the regional meet.
Lifters Carrington Davis won the 181 pound weight class, Chelsea Price the 220 pound weight class and Jessie Henry the 97 pound weight class. Sisters Sierra and Emma Skinner each finished second in the 105 and 114 pound weight classes.
Davis is the only lifter who is coming in with any state experience. A senior, Davis is making her fourth appearance, coming off earning a fifth place medal last year.
Her 980 total pounds she put up at the regional meet is the third highest in her weight class in the state. She has lifted 1,000 pounds this year, but she was competing in the 198 pound class at that meet.
Despite winning, Davis was not happy with her performance at regionals and hopes she can go out with a new personal record. If she does that, there is a good chance of finishing in the top three.
Price’s best total of 930 total pounds has her ranked ninth heading into the state meet. The sophomore made a huge leap from her freshman year. A top 10 finish at state will be just the thing to build on heading into her senior year if she also puts up a new personal best.
Henry’s highest total of 550 pounds has her sitting just outside of the top 10 in a tie for 11th place. The tiny sophomore already made a big improvement from her freshman year to win at regionals.
A lot of girls sit tightly packed together in the standings heading into the meet. If Henry makes a big 20-30 pound jump, it would easily get her into a top 10 finish. With two more years to compete, any accomplishment at state is just gravy for Henry.
For Sierra and Emma, they will not only need to put up their best performances of the season, but also need some help from other girls bombing out if they want to break into the top 10.
Still, the story of these sisters both making it to the state meet is already such a great story. Emma competed last year as a freshman and just missed out earning a medal at regionals last year. This year she finished second in the region.
Older by one year, Sierra had never competed despite their older brother Jacob also competing and excelling at powerlifting. Sierra showed that natural strength ran in the family.
The cheerleader became the second Lady Rabbits to qualify for the state meet in powerlifting in only her first year of competition, following Emily Cox Boyd’s example from last year.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
