Bowie golf earns district title

Published

on

Nocona and Bowie competed at the district golf tournament on Wednesday at the Childress Country Club.
For Bowie, the boy’s team was able to overcome last year’s disappointment of not qualifying for the regional meet by winning this year.
Parker Price shot the best round of the whole tournament with a 72 and Riley Harris was second with a score of 78. Imanol Walker shot an 87, Jay Anderson shot 100 and Hunter Wade shot a 111.
Coach Matt Miller was proud of how the guys did and how driven they were to accomplish what they did.
“These guys have been motivated since last year,” Miller said. “They felt like they didn’t play their best a year ago, and they worked really hard to prove themselves today. It was awesome to be able to sit back and watch them perform.”
It was a windy day, but conditions were not too taxing for players who stayed patient.
For Nocona, Hunter Fenoglio finished second overall among players whose teams finished outside the top two with a score of 83 to qualify for the regional tournament for the second straight year. Fenoglio also plays baseball and has had to balance that this year, but still finished one stroke behind the leader.
Coach Colby Schniederjan was impressed with Fenoglio’s round and likes his chances at the regional meet.
“Hunter is a competitor and I would put him up against anyone over a couple of rounds,” Schniederjan said.
For the Lady Rabbits, Miller was able to pull together enough girls to make a complete team late in the season. While the scores were not the best, Miller appreciated how much effort the girls put in to get better and learn the game in such a short time.
With some of the girls young and inexperienced before this year, Miller hopes to see them stick with the sport in the future.
Halle Duvall led the team shooting 132. Gabrielle Sakel shot a 139 while Sage Bullock and Katie Turlington both shot 151.
For the Indians, Blake Gauna shot a 104, John Womack shot 113, Dalton Kirby shot 118 and Lane Geurin shot a 123.
Returning only one girl from last year, Schniederjan liked the improvement he saw from the Lady Indians throughout the season. While the group fell short, the progress has him hopeful for next year.
Cobi Womack led the team shooting 121. Paris Trosper shot a 137, Laci Stone shot a 138 and Maci McWilliams shot 141.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
