Bowie boy’s win district title
The district track meet wrapped up Thursday night at City View for both Bowie and Nocona teams.
The Bowie boy’s team repeated as overall team district champions for the second straight year despite some new faces in the district.
The Jackrabbits went into the final relay race with the title wrapped up and won by 12 points to district newcomer Childress thanks to a big first day in field events.
District champions included: Alex Shelton winning the 3200 and 1600 races; Joey Crawford winning the pole vault; A.J. Craddock winning the 110-meter hurdles; Logan Lawhorn winning the high jump and Daniel Mosley winning the shot put.
All of those athletes and some others also earned valuable points in many other events.
Up big after day one of field events, Coach Justin Prescott credits Childress cutting the lead close.
“We came out 40 points up and usually with a 40 point lead you feel secure, but they kept fighting back, fighting back until our guys just gutted it out,” Prescott said.
The Lady Rabbits came up a painful half point short of tying for the district lead with the district champions from Holliday. Bowie had the lead heading into the final relay and needed to finish at least one space behind the Lady Eagles to hold on to the win. Unfortunately, the Lady Cats from Childress finished in front of Bowie and a tie on a field event on day one ended up costing the Lady Rabbits winning back-to-back district titles like the boy’s team.
District champions for Bowie included: Abby Zamzow winning both the hurdle races and both the long and triple jumps; Jayci Logan winning the both the 100 and 200 meter races and Hope Howard winning the shot put. The 4×100 meter relay team of Zamzow, Logan, Brysen Richey and Landra Parr also won as well.
The teams from Nocona had trouble overall with both finishing sixth. However a couple athletes won their events and many more qualified for area. Tyler Richards and Kylie Rose each won the 400 meter race.
Top four finishers in each event qualify for the area meet.
