Kathy Green says she is a teacher at heart, but now she is a “teacher of teachers” bringing her classroom experience to the top job at Bowie Elementary School.
Green was hired in May as assistant principal and was preparing to start that job, but when Principal Steven Valkenar resigned, she applied and got her first principal’s job.
The 46-year-old Green grew up in Boyd and graduated from high school there in 1991. She earned her bachelor degree in 1995 from West Texas A&M University, got married and began raising a family with her band director husband in Andrews and landed her first job in the classroom at Glorieta Elementary as a first grade teacher.
Green is the only educator in her family. Her original path in college had been commercial art and graphic design. She recalls in college having several friends studying education and her mind began to switch over to a new direction.
“Once I started down that road, I fell in love with it. I also worked at the church nursery hanging out with all the kids. I decided that is what I wanted to do: Work in education. In college I also worked at Kindercare which affirmed I wanted to work around the younger kids,” explains Green.
