Nocona
The Nocona Lady Indians traveled on Tuesday to take on Bridgeport, one of the top ranked teams in 4A.
The Lady Indians hung in there in a back and forth match with neither team able to put the other away. Unfortunately, the home team pulled out the win in the fifth set to send Nocona home a little put down, but also encouraged.
The Sissies came in with division I recruit Zoe Hall and tall Anna Strother. The Lady Indians knew they were going to give them issues all night with the team’s relative lack of elite height at the net.
Still, Nocona battled in a first set that could have gone either way. Some service errors from the Lady Indians cost them the set as Bridgeport won 26-24.
Nocona refocused and dominated set two to win 25-10 to tie the match. The Sissies wrestled back control by closing out the end of set three to win 25-18 to retake the lead.
The fourth set was another battle with neither team able to gain much of a lead. This time the Lady Indians were able to make the plays at the end to take the set 26-24 to force a fifth set.
Bridgeport grabbed control of the set and won 15-9 to take the match.
Averee Kleinhans led Nocona with 26 kills while adding 11 digs, three assists and two blocks. Ella Nunneley provided a good second option with 15 kills while setter Trystin Fenoglio had a season high of 50 assists to go along with a team high three aces.
On defense, libero Laramie Hayes led the team with 19 digs while middle blocker Jessica Dingler led the team with three blocks.
Nocona next plays Lindsay at home at 6 p.m. on Aug. 27 before they get ready for its hosted Buckle Up for Lane tournament next weekend.

Prairie Valley
The Prairie Valley Lady Bulldogs traveled to Chillicothe on Tuesday night and picked up a solid win against the Lady Eagles in straight sets.
The Lady Bulldogs had to work to win each set, but were able win each by a comfortable enough lead to not sweat things too much. Prairie Valley won 25-18, 25-19 and 25-2.
Emily Carpenter led the team with 12 kills with Shelby Roof right behind her with 10 kills. Veronica Gutierrez dished out 14 assists to lead the team while libero Hailey Winkler led the team with 10 digs.
Prairie Valley next plays Northside at 5 p.m. at home on Aug. 27.

Forestburg
The Forestburg Lady Horns traveled to Perrin-Whitt on Tuesday and showed some good things to the Lady Pirates.
Unfortunately, the Lady Horns came up short as they lost in four sets.
Perrin-Whitt won the first set 25-13, but Forestburg came back to win a tightly contested second set 25-23 to show it was not playing around. The Lady Pirates tightened things up in sets three and four and took care of business to win 25-13 and 25-17 against the Lady Horns.
Keeleigh Burnam led the team with four kills and seven digs. Katie Willett led the team with five assists to go with her three kills. Athena Britain had a team high five aces to go along with two kills and five digs on defense.
Forestburg next plays at 5 p.m. at Bryson on Aug. 27.

Forestburg coach retiring

Published

on

Forestburg boys basketball coach Eldon Van Hooser helped lead the program to its first playoff win in nine years in his last year coaching.

Eldon Van Hooser is leaving Forestburg better than he found it.
The head boy’s basketball coach is retiring after more than 30 years, spending the last five at Forestburg.
Van Hooser did not come to this decision because of a lack of fire or feeling tired after decades in the profession. He had to for family reasons.
“My wife has MS (multiple sclerosis) and it’s a disease where you have trouble standing and walking and she needs help,” Van Hooser said. “I am able to so I am going to step away from teaching and coaching to be there for her.”
Van Hooser was hired in 2019. Along with being the boy’s basketball coach, he also was the football team’s defensive coordinator.
There were some lean years for Forestburg on the boy’s athletic side, with numbers being low and the available athletes being mostly underclassmen.
For two years, the Longhorns’ boy’s basketball team won few games and one of those seasons saw the team field five players on the high school team.
“One of those years we had COVID-19 and the other we had five kids,” Van Hooser said. “It was very rough. After that we worked with the kids and we had a good freshman group coming up. Next year they are going to be seniors.”
That group has helped to turn the program around. Last year the young Longhorns team contested for a playoff spot and just barely missed it finishing fifth in the district.
This season, that same group took a leap and finished second in district with a record of 7-5.
Despite losing its last two regular season games in dramatic fashion heading into the playoffs, the team stepped up in the bi-district game.
Playing against an athletic Newcastle team, Forestburg led for most of the game.
Unfortunately, the previous game against Bellevue saw the Longhorn team blow the lead late in the fourth quarter against a hard pressing style team and they were suffering the same fate against the Bobcats down the stretch.
Fortunately, Forestburg held on just enough to win 53-46. It was the first boy’s basketball playoff win in nine years for Forestburg.
“It was huge for our program,” Van Hooser said. “This new year we will have new goals. The new coach will have some goals of his own, but I set some for the team and think that we have come a long way.”
