Prairie Valley vs Saint Jo
County teams Prairie Valley and Saint Jo played each other on Friday night in a rematch from last year’s tussle in the regional quarterfinals.
The Lady Panthers might have come out on top last year, but it was the Lady Bulldogs who found some sort redemption by winning at home 3-1.
The first set saw Prairie Valley win with a comfortable margin 25-16. The second set was much closer, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to win 25-22 to go up 2-0.
Saint Jo was able to rebound and win the third set 25-20 to avoid losing in straight sets.
Unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, Prairie Valley did not give Saint Jo any chance to think about forcing a fifth set. The Lady Bulldogs got up early and did not let go as they won 25-10 to win the match.
Prairie Valley’s Veronica Gutierrez led the team with 19 assists, Emily Carpenter led the team with 15 kills and Hailey Winkler led the team with 24 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs Coach Jeannie Carpenter was worried her girls would get in their own heads trying to get revenge, but instead her team pulled together its best game of the season.
Saint Jo Coach Charlie Hamilton did not have a lot to say about the game other than her team did not play well.
Prairie Valley next plays at Wichita Christian at 5 p.m. on Aug. 30 before traveling to Gold-Burg on Aug. 31 to play in its final tournament. The Lady Panthers next travel to Chico and will play at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 30.
Forestburg vs Gold-Burg
Gold-Burg played its second county opponent of the week on Friday as it traveled to Forestburg, taking on Saint Jo at home earlier in the week.
The Lady Bears would end up winning 3-1, but the Lady Horns made them work for it in most sets.
The first set was close, but Gold-Burg made the plays at the end to win 25-22. Forestburg won the second set that was equally as close 25-21 to tie the match up at one set apiece.
The Lady Bears made the push to win the third set 25-22 before wrapping the match up with a big 25-14 four set win.
Gold-Burg Coach Cheryl Cromleigh liked how her team looked in the win, especially on the road.
Despite the loss, Forestburg Coach Cori Hayes liked the competitiveness he saw from his team.
Katie Williett led the team with eight kills and added six assists. Katelyn Park had a team high 11 assists while Athena Britain had a team high eight aces and 11 digs. Bailey Payne also had a team high 11 digs.
The Lady Bears will host its tournament on Aug. 31 all day while the Lady Horns next host Savoy at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 30.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach
Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona softball falls to Archer City
Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.
The Lady Indians took a quick lead but the Lady ‘Cats had too much in the tank and knocked Nocona out of the playoffs courtesy of a 13-3, five-inning victory winning the best of three series, 2-0.
Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.
Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district
Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
