Bowie loses opening game 46-6

Published

on

The Bowie Jackrabbits football started its season on a tough note as it traveled to Godley on Friday night.
The Jackrabbits lost 46-6 in a game that was dominated by the Wildcats.
Bowie started the game off with a great play. On defense, tall cornerback Boo Oakley jumped in front of a pass to the flat and raced 60 yards for a touchdown to put the Jackrabbits up 6-0 on Godley’s opening offensive drive.
The Wildcats got the ball again, but Bowie’s defense again forced a turnover as it recovered a fumble to prevent Godley from scoring. Unfortunately, the Jackrabbit’s offense could not get moving and on the ensuing punt, the Wildcats blocked the kick and fell on the ball in the endzone for a touchdown.
The extra point put Godley up 7-6 and the Wildcats never looked back.
Two long touchdown passes from Ethan McBrayer to Caden Midkiff, one from 78 and the other from 27 yards away, put Godley up 20-6 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw McBrayer cap off a drive with a short two-yard run for another score from the Wildcats. Godley added another score before halftime with an interception returned for a touchdown. Bowie trailed 33-6 at halftime.
The Jackrabbit’s defense picked up in the second half. Another Wildcat touchdown was averted when Tru’Vion Sansom intercepted a pass inside Bowie’s 10-yard line after jumping a slant route.
Godley’s only score in the third quarter came on special teams. Parker Priddy took back a punt 42 yards for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 39-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Godley added one more touchdown early in the fourth quarter with a nine-yard rush from Kobly Bartlet to make the final score 46-6.
Bowie’s offense struggled to score with 177 total yards of offense and four turnovers, with big plays coming few and far between. Drives just could not be sustained as the team went 4-16 in third down conversions and 0-3 on fourth down.
Coach Cory Mandrell did not see much good from his team Friday night. With several players playing in their first official varsity game, he hopes everything can get smoothed out with more experience.
“We all will continue to get better and better,” Mandrell said. “The more experience we get.”
The Jackrabbits play their first home game this Friday against an equally tough Bridgeport team that is coming off a big loss as well. Kick-off will be at 7:30 p.m.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
