For the first time in its history, the City of Bowie Fire Department has a husband and wife as volunteers, taking the first steps in pursuing a new career for their young family.
During the recent firefighter badge pinning ceremony, Abe and Sydney Rizwan, gave each other their new shields, a symbol of that new path that also includes other family members who are part of the firefighting family.
Abe and Sydney both grew up in the Bowie area. Abe moved to the city from Alvord when he was in fifth grade, while Sydney grew up and graduated from Bowie High School. Abe, now 21, left high school early to become a young father to his daughter Bella. He works at WL Plastics and is taking GED classes and firefighter online courses.
Sydney, age 20, works as a certified nurse’s attendant at Decatur Medical Lodge, and she has completed emergency medical technician courses taking the test in December. Read the full feature in the mid-week Bowie News available today.

July Jam planned for July 27

Published

on

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
