Dr. Max Gordon Latham MD


December 8, 1938 – November 6, 2020
BOWIE – Dr. Max Gordon Latham, MD, 82, passed away on Nov. 6, 2020.
Dr. Latham was born Dec. 8, 1938 in Weatherford to Nathalie and Curtis Dixon Latham. He was an avid Scouter obtaining the rank of Eagle at age 14. He remained active in Scouting as an adult serving as a Scout Master during the time his sons earned their Eagle ranks. Dr. Latham served in various leadership positions with the BSA, including two terms as President of NETSEO Trails Council. He graduated from Bowie High School in 1956 and served as student body president his senior year.
Dr. Latham enrolled at North Texas State College, now known as North Texas State University. He graduated in three years with a bachelor of arts degree. He was accepted in Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and received his doctor of medicine degree in 1963. He began an internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth followed by Family Practice Residency as chief resident. He moved into private practice in Suphur Springs with a career spanning 38 years. Dr. Latham twice served as Chief of Staff as well as Mayor pro tem of Sulphur Springs City Council.
Survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of an over 65-year courtship and marriage, Margin Stovall Latham; son, Greig Stovall and Katie, Tyler, daughter Kathryn Keese Threadgill and husband, Brad, Rockwall, and son, Robert Lee and wife, Debbie, Black Mountain, NC. Beloved grandchildren, Major Garret Stovall Latham, a doctor in philosophy and wife, Elizabeth, Fort Sam Houston, Stuart William Latham and wife, Abrielle, Tyler, Quincie Elise Latham, Black Mountain, NC, and John Gordon Latham, College Station, Texas student at Texas A&M University, Bryce Butterfield, Fort Bragg, NC and Kayla Michele Butterfield, College Station student at Texas A&M University. Great-grandchildren, Benjamin Stovall Latham, Michael McRae Latham, Lucas Henderson Latham, and Julianna Elizabeth Latham, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. Beloved brother and life-long hunting buddy, Joel Pat Latham and wife, Judy, Mansfield. Beloved cousins, nieces and nephew.
Dr. Latham served his country in the National Guard Captain in the Medical Corps.
Max served as a long-time Deacon of Shannon Oaks Church of Christ in Sulphur Springs, Texas and Carter Lake Road church of Christ, Bowie Texas. Max was an avid life-long hunter and fisherman worldwide. Many years of travel to Texas A&M University attending Corps of Cadets March-ins for son Greig and grandchildren Garrett and Stuart. In addition, “take-out for supper” times with John and Kayla, students at Texas A&M University. Upon retiring from private medical practice in Sulphur Springs, Margin and Max returned home to Bowie. Max spent the next 20 years as a traveling doctor and emergency room physician at Kell West, Wichita Falls. From the age of five, Max wanted to become a physician and absolutely loved the profession. He studied different areas and always practiced innovative techniques. In retirement, he begins a career in woodworking. Several beautiful items produced, passed from “The Shop on the Hill” to family and friends. His major projects were building bedroom suites for all grandchildren upon their marriage. Four have been completed and are cherished reminders of their grandaddy Max’s love.

Barbara Ann (Garrett) Winingham

December 16, 1933 – March 25, 2025
BOWIE -Barbara Ann (Garrett) Winingham, 92, went home to the Lord on March 25, 2025.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 4 at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie.
A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on April 5 at the First Baptist Church of Bowie.
Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie with pallbearers, Christopher Judy, Andrew Judy, Hance Winingham, Jake Hall, Kevin Browning and Greg Shaw.
Barbara was the daughter of Henry and Lorine (Lindsay) Garrett, was born on Dec. 16, 1933 in Bowie. She was the granddaughter of John and Delia (Cowart) Lindsay, Miles and Martha (Faulkenberry) Garrett and Jeptha George Stallings. Starting with her great, great, grandfather, her ancestors were all early Montague County pioneers who moved to this area before 1876.
Barbara graduated from Bowie High School in 1950 and attended Midwestern University with a full music scholarship. She was a member of the Texas Governor Shiver’s official band in 1951 and performed at the Governor’s inauguration. Ultimately, she graduated from the Baylor University School of Medical Technology.
Barbara married James Lee Winingham, a life-long resident of Montague, County on Sept. 6, 1952. The Winingham’s initially resided in Fairbanks, Alaska where James was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Their oldest daughter, Donna Elaine Winingham, was born in Fairbanks in the hospital in which Barbara was employed. The family moved back to Bowie in 1955 when James secured employment with the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 years. Barbara, a registered technologist, worked in the lab of multiple clinics and hospitals during her 35-year career including Westgate Hospital in Denton (nine years), establishing the laboratory at the opening of newly constructed Nocona General Hospital (two years) and the Bowie Hospital.
Barbara cited that the greatest achievement of her life was her four children. In addition to Donna born in Alaska in 1955, MarilynJudy (1957), Janet (1962) and David (1967) were born in Bowie.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Talmadge Garrett; parents, Henry and Lorine (Lindsay) Garrett (Seeds); stepfather, Charlie O. Seed; niece Anita (Garrett) Jones and Anita’s daughter, Laura Brown.
Barbara is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Donna, Templeton, CA, Marilyn and husband, Kenneth Judy, Crawford and Janet Monkres, Forney; son, David Winingham, Bowie; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Christine, Andrew and wife Caterina all of Southlake, Lindsay Judy, Crawford, Samantha and husband, Jake Hall, Abilene, Hance Winingham, Waco, Gabrielle and husband, Preston Baird, Kingwood, Alexandra Sakel, Tyler, and Emma and Houston Crawfish, California; great-grandchildren, Faith and Luke Judy, Eliana, Micah and Daniel Judy, and Caleb Hall; nephew, Lewis Garrett and wife, Natasha, Coppelland, and too many cousins to count.

Bobby Gene Lively

July 31, 1933 – March 24, 2025
BOWIE – Bobby Gene Lively, 91, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025.
There will be a family visitation at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie from 6-8 p.m. on April 3.
A graveside service will take place at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery on April 4.
Bobby was born in Dallas to J.C. and Beulah Lively. As a child, he was fascinated with airplanes, which led to a lifetime in aviation. It began with his service in the U.S. Navy, where he was trained as a naval aviator. He continued as a commercial airline pilot for Braniff International and finished as an instructor and inspector for the FAA.
One summer while in college, he met the love of his life, Shirley Jo Wood, in Pampa, while working with a construction company building the church building where Shirley’s family attended. They married in that building on March 5, 1955, and were married for 62 years before Shirley passed away. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Suzan, Kristi, Steven and Kevin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Kristi Alexander, and brother, Bill Lively.
Bobby is survived by his children, Suzan and Kenton Holloway, Steven and Veda Lively, and Kevin and Michelle Lively; brothers, Gerald and Peggy Lively, and Larry and Sharron Lively; grandchildren, Scott and Sara Holloway, Shane and Rachael Holloway, Kendra and Jake Rainey, Megan Lively, Lindsay Lively, Kristen Lively, Nathan Lively, Beckham Anderson, Cambria Lively and Anistyn Lively; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to the Carter Lake Road church of Christ Mission Fund, Bowie.

Mary Helen Heugatter Crow

February 17, 1933 – March 27, 2025
BOWIE – Mary Helen Heugatter Crow, 92, died on March 27, 2025.
The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. on March 30 at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie.
A graveside service was at 10 a.m. on March 31 at Brushy Cemetery in Bowie with Alan Heugatter officiating.
She was born on Feb. 17, 1933 in Jacksboro to Alfa Eubanks Colloway and Charley Quincy Calloway.She was raised by her grandparents Tom and Laura Eubanks.
She married Ray Heugatter and together they had four children. Randel Heugatter, Ann Sanders, Roy Heugatter and Fred Heugatter. She retired from Bowie Independent School District after many years as supervisor of the cafeteria.
She later married Jack Crow. Her stepchildren are Joe and Rodger Crow and Linda Brown.
She is survived by her children; stepchildren; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
