Fire destroys Ace Hardware in Bowie

Published

on

A fire swept through Ace Hardware/Bowie Lumber Lumber in Bowie Monday evening destroying the building located at 602 W. Wise.
The fire call came in about 8:45 p.m. on Monday and when City of Bowie firefighters arrived heavy smoke was coming from the building and flames could be seen on the roof toward the back. Fire Chief Doug Page said it was already going pretty good and the heavy fire load inside helped fuel it. He expected it would be a total loss.
Store officials report the last person out of the building was about 7:30 p.m. shortly after the store closed. Page said Tuesday morning at this point the cause of the fire is not known and it is under investigation.
He agreed this is the largest business fire the city has seen since the Richardson Furniture (Scruggs Furniture) store fire that occurred July 23, 1990 in the heart of downtown where almost a half a block burned down.

This lawsuit goes back to August 2019 when Midwest sued the city for its action requiring those who receive city water outside the city limits to use the designated waste collector, which is Waste Connections. This was shortly after the city signed a new long-term contract with WC.
The suit was dismissed in June 2020 on two points in the suit, but City Manager Bert Cunningham said a third point remained in mediation.
