BOWIE ROUNDUP: Thompson to be feted Saturday

Former Bowie High School athlete James “Tommy” Thompson will be honored at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at University Park Nursing Home in Wichita Falls.
The physical address is 4511 Coronado Avenue.
He will become an official member of Bowie’s Hall of Honor.
The ceremony was moved up from this coming summer to this weekend.
Thompson was a 1959 graduate of Bowie High School where he was a four-year starter on the 1959 state runner-up boys’ basketball squad. The Jackrabbits were also fourth in 1957.
Thompson played for fellow Bowie Hall of Honor member Bobby Brashear.
As a freshman, Thompson averaged 8.8 points per game. As a sophomore, his scoring average jumped to 16.3 points per contest and then 18.2 points per game as a junior.
Thompson averaged 27.7 points per game as a senior for Bowie, which finished with a 31-5 mark during the 1958-59 campaign. He paced the Jackrabbits to the crown in the Whataburger Tournament during the inaugural event back in the 1950s – named most valuable player. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

James Thompson was a standout basketball player for Southern Methodist University in Dallas and, before that, he starred at Bowie High School. Thompson was the first-ever tournament most valuable player at the Whataburger Tournament in Fort Worth, guiding the Jackrabbits to the inaugural title in 1958. McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
