Bowie softball starts season
It was a tough first week of games for the Bowie Lady Rabbits softball team.
The Lady Rabbits lost their opening game of the season 13-0 against Valley View before going 2-3 at the Jacksboro tournament.
Bowie opened the season against the Lady Eagles a day after the girl’s basketball team lost its playoff game. The quick turnaround meant those girls did not have much playing time against Valley View.
The game did not start well as the Lady Eagles scored eight runs in the first inning. Bowie had little offensive answer with the team getting three hits and drawing four free bases as the Lady Rabbits were shut out.
Valley View won after five innings 13-0.
Bowie’s first tournament game on Friday against Graham went much better after some more practice time.
After a tight first inning and the Lady Blues leading 4-3, the Lady Rabbits put together a great eight run second inning to take a 11-4 lead. That was enough to win the game following a scoreless third inning.
The next game against Mineral Wells was close, but the Lady Rams came out on top with a walk off home run.
Bowie was able to take a 3-2 lead in its final at bat, but after tying the game, Mineral Wells hit a 3-run home run to win the game 6-3.
The final game of the day came against Stephenville.
Bowie did a good job of limiting the Yellowjackets to only a few runs each inning instead of surrendering a lot, but the Lady Rabbits did not have much of an answer with their bats.
The team had only four base runners and two hits in three innings as Stephenville won 6-0.
Saturday started out well for the Lady Rabbits. Bowie won big 17-3 with most of the damage coming in the first inning. The Lady Rabbits scored 11 runs in the first inning and added six more in the final inning.
Bowie’s last game of the tournament ended in disappointment after a promising start. The Lady Rabbits scored four runs in the first inning and led 7-4 heading into the final inning.
The Lady Bobcats then reeled off five runs to take the lead 9-7 and Bowie could not answer with its bats.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
