HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie girls win with depth

The Bowie High School girls’ basketball team and Paradise vied for District 3A-9 supremacy on Friday evening.
Well, for the Lady Rabbits, their depth and their ability to knock down crucial fourth-quarter free throws helped them to a 42-35 conquest over the Lady Panthers.
With the victory, Bowie stands two games clear of Paradise in the district standings. The Lady Rabbits are now 24-5 overall, 11-0 in 3A-9.
“Paradise is a tough place to play,” Bowie head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said. “It was a game of free throws, and we stepped up and hit them. That’s what we did.”
Courtney Brady, who paced Bowie with 13 points, sank all four free throws she took during the final frame. Addy Cook made two foul shots. So did Jordan Brightwell. And reserve Henslee Ogle canned 3-of-4 free throws.
Bowie scored all of its fourth-quarter points from the stripe.
Because Kamryn Cantwell and several other Lady Rabbits were riddled with foul trouble during the game, bench players like Lily Gill and Ogle played a vital role in the win.
“Henslee played really well,” Davis-Pastusek said. “She gave us good minutes. We needed her, and she made an impact.”
Bowie’s defense excelled yet again, holding Paradise guards Kaylee McConnell and Courtney Kerr to four points apiece. McConnell and Kerr combined for 28 points in the game at Bowie earlier this season.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
