Nocona
The Nocona Indians lost a tough non-district game at Celina on Tuesday night.
The 4A Bobcats won 55-25 against an Indian team that struggled to score all game.
Nocona failed to score in double-digits in any of the four quarters while Celina did in every one.
Coach Brody Wilson thought the team did not play well on that end, but also gave the Bobcats credit for making it tough for them.
“We took some bad shot selections at time and were stagnant on offense, but Celina did a good job of guarding us,” Wilson said. “I think at times we were having good possessions in the first half and playing well on defense. Being down nine at the half, we just needed to keep it close and have good offensive possessions and we didn’t do that.”
Brady McCasland led the team with nine points while Luke Fuller grabbed down a team high seven rebounds.
Saint Jo vs Gold-Burg
The Saint Jo Panthers won the first game of the new year at Gold-Burg on Tuesday night.
The Panthers won easily 61-24 in a game where both teams were rusty from not having played since at least Dec. 20.
Both were looking for their first district wins as Saint Jo lost to Midway and the Bears had not started district before the break, having last played Vernon Northside on Dec. 13.
The Panthers used their tempo and pressure, according to Coach Ryan Bruce, to take the lead early. Saint Jo had big quarters in the first and third periods, outscoring Gold-Burg during that time 22-5 and 21-3.
The Panthers had four players score in double-figures. Kile Thurman scored 13, Josh Vogel scored 12, Brice Durham had 11 and Dylan Brockman finished with 10 points.
The Bears leading scorer was Jayon Grace with 10 points.
Prairie Valley
The Prairie Valley Bulldogs lost their first game of the new year at Slidell on Tuesday night.
The Greyhounds won 66-23 against the young Bulldogs team.
Prairie Valley coming off playing five games the previous week to shake off the holiday rust in preparation to the restart of district, but perennial district favorites Slidell had other plans.
The Bulldogs started off the game well with quick buckets and some defensive stops, but some adjustments from the Greyhounds along with four 3-pointers at the end of the quarter allowed them to get the upper hand.
Prairie Valley never got it back as the team scored in double-figures in only one quarter during the game.
Coach Seth Stephens, who is pulling double-duty coaching both the boy’s and girl’s teams, thought the team did not do a good job of sticking to the game plan.
Forestburg
The Forestburg Longhorns lost a tough game to start the new year at Midway.
The Falcons won 77-33 against the young Longhorn team.
Forestburg had last played on Dec. 20 in the district opener against equally tough Slidell and lost. After the long break it was always going to be tough.
The Longhorns struggled to score, surpassing double-digits only in the fourth quarter while Midway scored 20 or more twice.
Jesse Wadsworth led the team with 11 points while Kyler Willett was second with nine points.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach
Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district
Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
