OUTDOORS: Park Ranger Academy coming

Published

on

Want to be a park ranger?
Or have you ever wondered about the inner machinations of a Texas state park?
Then consider enrolling in the Citizen’s Park Ranger Academy offered this spring by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Students will meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Saturday from April 4-25, and enrollees will split their time between Dinosaur Valley and Cleburne State Parks – both south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Students must be at least 15 years old to attend without a parent and be prepared to engage in physically demanding activities such as lifting, hiking and crawling.
Fifteen individuals were trained from the first academy back in 2013.
Now, seven of those participants volunteer at Dinosaur Valley. Seven more applied for jobs with the TPWD and two were hired.
This year’s Citizen’s Park Ranger Academy features several new elements, as reported by Dinosaur Valley State Park police officer and Superintendent Robert Enckhausen.
Students will learn about such topics as wildland firefighting, park interpretation, search and rescue and law enforcement.
Enrollees also will study field operations, large equipment use, participate in a large archeological session and Dutch Oven cook-off.
Park staff will lead the activities, and there is no cost to attend the academy. Slots are limited. Registration must be completed by March 1.
For more information, call Enckhausen at 1-254-897-4588 or email: [email protected].

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
