HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PREVIEW: Coaches begin stamping programs

Bowie and Nocona High School baseball teams have second-year baseball coaches in Ryan Rogers and Brent Lewis, respectively.
Both young coaches are beginning to put their stamp on programs.
Bowie is coming off a 16-14 season in which the Jackrabbits finished 5-5 in district action and lost in the bi-district round to Cisco.
Nocona went 10-14, and didn’t qualify for the playoffs.
Bowie and Nocona were placed in what should be a competitive district.
“There are going to be six teams in the mix vying for four playoff spots,” Rogers said. “I think Paradise and Holliday are locks to make it.”
Rogers said he likes that the Jackrabbits were placed into an eight-team district because that will give the team more of a routine this season – with meaningful games every Tuesday and Friday.
“There are some great baseball coaches in this district,” Lewis said. “It’s going to be a tough district. I could see us being up.”
Bowie will open the season with its own tournament next week while Nocona will play host to Muenster on Tuesday, March 3, at 5 p.m.
Bowie’s first district game will be at Jacksboro on March 17 while Nocona will open 3A-9 play the same night at Henrietta.
Bowie will play Nocona in Nocona on April 3 and the Jackrabbits and Indians will play again on April 28. Read more in the Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
