HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Alba-Golden’s depth too much for Bowie girls

The Bowie High School girls’ basketball team was eliminated from the University Interscholastic League Conference 3A playoffs Saturday.
Alba-Golden’s depth proved to be too much – and Bowie wore down in the fourth quarter – as the Panthers downed the Lady Rabbits 59-53 at Rockwall Heath High School.
“I thought it was their depth,” Bowie head girls’ basketball coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said. “They had 10 girls, and they we’re able to rotate them in and out.”
In addition, Bowie was held to 23 second-half points as scoring became more difficult, and field-goal makes were fewer and far between.
“We just didn’t hit our field goals,” Davis-Pastusek said. “We had trouble making baskets, shots that would normally fall for us.”
Regardless, the Bowie program took major steps forward this season. The Lady Rabbits produced a 30-win season, and they advanced to the regional semifinals. Overall, Bowie was 30-6.
This was the farthest postseason penetration for Bowie since 2009. Tennessee State-bound Jordan Brightwell, Logan McMurray and Lily Gill will be lost to graduation.
McMurray was known for her leadership and work ethic. Brightwell provided rebounding and defense. Gill was a spark off the bench, helping with perimeter shooting.
“All three of them are great kids and they left a good mark on the program,” the coach commented. “They were all good basketball players and they will all be successful in their future careers.”

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

The lead line division, in which an adult helps the young competitors, saw Rylee Stewart win the first in poles, barrel racing and mystery event on her way to win top cowgirl.
Hattie Snow got the fastest time in the flags event and Lany Shupak got the fastest goat time. Riggin Bishop got named the top cowboy in the division.
In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
