Saint Jo City to consider selling 2.77 acres by bid

Published

on

Members of the Saint Jo City Council will discuss the possible sale of 2.775 acres of land on U.S. Highway 82 through sealed bid when they meet at 6 p.m. on April 10 in Saint Jo City Hall.
This acreage is part of a nearly 50-acre tract of land owned by the city east of town that includes land occupied by the wastewater plant, Easy Street Shelter and a property facing the highway that was formerly leased to a construction company.
During the past six months there has been a lot of discussion in the council and community about a Dollar General store possibly locating in Saint Jo. This land was debated in a council session three months ago.
An executive session is set to consider the appointment of a new police officer, Roxanne Lindberg, to the city’s force.
Other items on Wednesday’s agenda include: Request by Trey Wilkins to host a Trade Days Event at Gilbert Freight Outlet on May 11; discuss a request by Richard and Hollis Notgrass on the division of 2.5 acres into separate properties; approve emergency medical service mutual aid agreement for the Saint Jo Volunteer EMS Department; consider adding two additional bank accounts for Saint Jo Municipal court for local truancy and prevention diversion fund and municipal jury fund; review bringing in a certified public accountant to aid in financial audits and approval of monthly bills, minutes and reports.

Illegal dumping continues at Bowie Mission

Published

on

Staff and volunteers at the Bowie Mission continue to be plagued by people who dump their unwanted furniture and other items at their gates and doors. Despite having signs stating this is illegal and that there are surveillance cameras on scene, dumpers don’t seem to be phased.

This past week several large pieces of furniture were dumped right in front of the gate where the trailer used to go pick up food bank items is stored. Cynthia Brewer, director said most of the volunteers are older and it is difficult to get these large items moved out of the way. She is at her wit’s end trying to get people to stop dumping and while she hesitates to file police charges the situation is getting untenable as people continue to violate the policy.

Anyone who observes illegal dumping at the mission is urged to call the police 872-2251.
