HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Bowie shows betterment on defense

Defense wins games.
Perhaps no sport is that more the case than softball. Bobbles and miscues can lead to big innings – for the other girls.
This weekend, the Bowie High School softball team made tremendous strides in improving their defense and it paid off as the Lady Rabbits went 3-2 at their own tournament.
Bowie now stands at 5-6, before the team played Nocona in the District 3A-9 opener for both squads on Tuesday evening.
“At the Brock Tournament two weeks ago, we made 26 errors in six games,” Bowie first-year head coach Brant Farris said. “Here we made eight errors in five games. We are starting to make routine plays, and defense is what we’ve been working on in practices.”
The weekend featured many highlights, including a Maylie Short no-hitter in a Bowie conquest over Decatur and Courtney Brady’s grand-slam home run in a loss to Petrolia.
“That was quite a feat,” Farris said. “She was able to hit her spots, and the defense stood behind her.”
In Short’s no-hitter, she recorded 29 strikes in 52 total pitches. She struck out four and walked one, giving up an unearned run. She threw 10 first-pitch strikes to help out.
Farris was pleased to see the girls battle through Friday’s cold weather. Both dugouts featured heaters as temperatures plummeted to about 40 degrees by the end of the Petrolia contest. Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
