HIGH SCHOOL FISHING: Bowie competes at Ray Roberts Saturday
The Bowie High School bass fishing team will compete in the Texas High School Bass Association West Division meet at Lake Ray Roberts this Saturday.
The meet will begin at 8 a.m. at Ray Roberts Marina in Sanger.
There will be $10 boat captains’ side pot for big bass, but that will not count toward the amount of fish student anglers catch, and the fish must be kept separate from the students’ haul.
There will be boat check from 5-8 p.m. on March 20, and then check in will be from 5:30-7:30 a.m. on March 21.
The tournament features length limits on largemouth and smallmouth bass with a 14-inch minimum. No minimum length for Guadalupe or spotted bass.
The daily bag limit is five fish, and the culling of dead fish is not allowed.
Bowie will take several teams to the meet, including Lane Hopson and Hadley Morgan.
Kollin Gillaspia and Jake Rhyne will continue to team up.
Other teams are Stetson Gaines and Brandon McChesney, Spenser Meekins and Jared Stone and Mitch Sanders will be a one-person team.
Bowie had a rough meet earlier this month at Lewisville Lake, and no teams caught any fish.
Currently, Bowie sits in 10th in the West Division Team of the Year standings. The Rabbits have 235 points, 2.5 points behind Aledo and one ahead of Sanger.
Hopson and Morgan are eighth in the team of the year standings, with 715.5 points, just 15 points outside of sixth place. Sanders and Kamry Weber is 19th overall, Gillaspia and Rhyne are 27th, Meekins and Stone are 44th and Brandon McChesney and Stetson Gaines are 45th.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
