HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Johnson to play in all-star game Saturday
Bowie High School senior point guard Trey Johnson will be playing in the 26th Annual Chicken Express All-Star Basketball Classic.
Johnson played sparingly this season, but contributed to Bowie finishing 25-10 overall. The Jackrabbits also won District 3A-9 and claimed bi-district and area championships during their playoff run.
The game will take place on Saturday at Mineral Wells High School. The girls’ game is set for 2 p.m. with the boys to follow at about 4 p.m.
Each player will be guaranteed four minutes of playing time per half.
Players were chosen from coaches nominations from 60 different schools in 14 counties surrounding Mineral Wells.
The admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Children up to four years old are admitted free.
There will be a 3-point shooting contest at halftime of both games, and Chicken Express will award a $1,000 scholarship to the winner of both the boys’ and girls’ contests.
Johnson will play on the same team as Lance Ewell from Brock, Lucas Simmons of Graford and Nick Wendt from Mineral Wells. The opposing team features Trey Gordon from Boyd, Quinten Tabor of Graford and Mineral Wells’ Biren Clardy. Read more in the mid-week News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
