HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Nocona’s Chism medalist at Waters

For area boys and girls golfers, just playing the sport proved to be a comforting feeling after the most recent stretch of rainy weather.
Bowie and Nocona played in the Norman Waters Invitational at Indian Oaks Golf Course, a par-70 which measures at 5,792 yards. Course conditions were still soggy from Saturday evening’s soaking rains.
“The course was still wet, but we were happy to be playing again,” Bowie head coach Jonathon Horton said. “This was our last tune-up before district.”
Next week, Bowie and Nocona will compete in a two-day District 3A-9 tournament, with Tuesday’s round at Runaway Bay and then Thursday at River Creek up in Burkburnett.
Nocona’s Josie Chism was the girls’ medalist with a 96, much to the delight of the small, hearty home crowd attending the event.
“I think she’s capable of even shooting lower,” Nocona coach Brad McGann said. “She was the only varsity girl to break 100. Her short game benefitted her, and she was always in good position.”
Chism was seven strokes clear of the field.
Maybe partially because of home-course advantage, but Nocona finished ahead of Bowie in both the boys and girls fields.
Stephanie Clement fired Bowie’s lowest round with a 106, while Chloe Polk was next at 108. That marked Clement’s career-best score, Horton reported. Read more, and see complete scores, in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
