BOWIE ALL-SPORTS BANQUET: Whitaker has ‘Spirit’

Bowie resident Carla Whitaker is typically responsible for organizing the Bowie High School All-Sports Banquet.
For her years of service to Bowie athletics, Whitaker was awarded the Jackrabbit Spirit during Monday’s banquet at the Community Center.
“I’ve done the sports banquet since around 1987, 1988,” said Whitaker. “I get the decorations, help with the pictures, and I find the caterer.”
Scott Whitaker and Cory Whitaker, Carla’s children, are Bowie High graduates. Cory, who is self-employed these days, was a top basketball player for the Jackrabbits during the mid-1990s and he was known as a shooting specialist.
“I’m thrilled to be able to do something for the Jackrabbits and Lady Rabbits,” Carla said.

FANS OF THE YEAR
Tracy and Norman Vaughan were named the fans of the year. Zeke Vaughan, Tracy and Norman’s son, recently represented the Jackrabbits at the University Interscholastic League state track and field meet in the high jump.
“It was very humbling,” Norman said, “when they said it. I could think of at least seven couples who were deserving; it took us by surprise we were honored.”
The Vaughans have five children in all. Marcus and Wesley Vaughan were both hurdlers in track and field, and that spurned Zeke on to the event. Read more, and see a complete list of award winners, in the weekend Bowie News.
