BASEBALL: NCTC alumns finding success
Two former North Central Texas College pitchers are finding success in Major League Baseball.
Sam Freeman was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Texas Rangers back in March.
A lefty, Freeman has pitched for both the Texas Rangers and Round Rock Express this season.
For the Rangers, Freeman has played in 28 games and pitched 18-2/3 innings with a 3.86 earned-run average. Sam has allowed eight earned runs on 17 hits (one home run). He’s struck out 17, walked six and hit two batters.
Freeman is a native from Carrollton who played at Hebron High School. Overall, he has a 3-2 record, and a 3.34 ERA with 62 strikeouts.
Chase Anderson has become a top-of-the-line starting pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, called up on May 6, 2014.
Anderson has put together a 4-3 record this season, with a 3.91 ERA, in 17 game starts and 101-1/3 innings pitched. He’s struck out 64 while walking 25 and with six hit batsmen.
Anderson, who played locally at Wichita Falls Rider, has posted a 13-10 record with 3.96 ERA during the past two years.
Arizona drafted him in the ninth round in 2009.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
