Fall ball coming to Bowie
Youth baseball players in Bowie will be lacing up their cleats for a second time this year as the first-ever fall baseball league gets underway.
The deadline to sign-up is fast approaching, with forms due no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 29. Registration forms can be picked up and returned to Fashion Floors, 202 N. Smythe St. or Margaret Hutson Realty, 200 N. Smythe St.
Players will be placed on teams based on their age as of May 1, 2018. Age divisions are as follows: Co-ed T-Ball, four-years-old; T-Ball, five and six; 5-Pitch, seven and eight; Midget, nine and 10; Little League, 11 and 12 and Pony, 13 and 15.
The cost is $30 and the draft will be Oct. 1. All games will be played starting at noon on Oct. 7, Oct. 14, Oct. 21 and Oct. 28. The days for practices will be left up to the coaches.
“We just didn’t have a fall league, so I took a Facebook survey to see if anyone would be interested and we had a ton of people who wanted to play,” said Brandon Rodriguez, who is helping with the league, which is a part of the Bowie Sports Association.
Rodriguez said the 2017 fall season will be a shorter season, but if enough players sign up it will be extended next year.
“The new league is a great opportunity to keep kids playing ball and staying sharp for the Spring,” said Rodriguez.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
