Bowie baseball bats come alive in tournament

Published

The Bowie Jackrabbits got into a groove at the Walker Stallcup Tournament last weekend.
The Jackrabbits went 4-1 while playing at home for the second tournament in a row, showing improvement in every facet.
Bowie first played Springtown and got the tournament started with a memorable performance. In the second inning Ryan Henson drove in a run on a single to give the Jackrabbits a 1-0 lead they would keep for the next two innings.
Pitcher Payton Price and the defense were keeping hitters at bay and base runners clean as he had a perfect game heading into the fifth inning.
It continued, but two fielding errors allowed the Pocupines to score a run to tie the game up at 1-1. Taylor Pigg was able to drive a run in the bottom of the fifth to allow Bowie to retake the lead.
The perfect game ended for Price with a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, but the no-hit bid continued as the next three batters were sat down. Cooper Little drove in another run to give the Jackrabbits a 3-1 lead where the game would end. Price completed the no-hitter, with the one walk the only blemish on his part.
Bowie did not have much time to celebrate as they had to turn around and play Pampa. The Harvesters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Price drove in a run to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the second inning.
Pampa was able to put up three runs thanks to two walks and an error to go up 4-1. In the third inning, the Harvesters scored two more runs thanks to a leadoff double, a fielding error and a balk to go up 6-1.
That proved to be all it took as Bowie struggled to string enough hits together and come through with clutch hitting as Pampa won.
The Jackrabbits did not play again until the last game on Friday night against Wichita Falls. The Coyotes struck first scoring two runs thanks to a walk, a fielding error and a base hit.
After Bowie failed to respond, Wichita Falls added another run in the second inning to go up 3-0.
The Jackrabbits were then able to string together six runs in an inning where the whole line up was cycled through. After two lackluster offensive performances on Thursday, this was the game that awakened Bowie’s bats.
The Jackrabbit bats were able to add one more run in the third inning and two runs each in the fourth and fifth while holding the Coyotes scoreless for the rest of the game. Bowie won big 11-3 heading into Saturday.
Three players had at two RBIs including Kash Stockard, Luis DeLeon and Price.
Bowie first played Vernon and the bats were still not cooled off. The Jackrabbits scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed. The Lions scored one run in the second inning on a wild pitch, but were silenced the rest of the game.
Bowie equaled the run in the inning while adding five more runs in the fourth and fifth inning as the Jackrabbits won 9-1.
Weston Partridge led the team with three RBIs while throwing a complete game on the mound. Braden Armstrong drove in two runs to help lead Bowie’s offense.
The Jackrabbits final game of the tournament came against Sanger. Bowie started the game well as leadoff man Evan Kennedy hit a home run. The team followed it with two more runs as the Jackrabbits led 3-0.
The Indians were able to tie the game in the second inning thanks to three hits and two fielding errors, but the score would not stay tied.
A triple from Kennedy scored another runner and a groundout from Partridge drove him in to give Bowie a 5-3 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Jackrabbits scored four runs in the fourth inning thanks to two steals home and RBIs from Ozzie Phillips and Pigg. Sanger was able to add one more run in the fifth inning, but that was all that she wrote. Bowie won 9-4.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
