2024 HS sports year in review: Bowie
The Bowie athletic program started the year with its powerlifting program sending three lifters to compete at the state meet.
The Lady Rabbits had two compete, Kinley Russell and Jordan Vaught. Lifting in the 3A Division I field, Vaught finished fourth in her weight class to bring home a medal in her last meet. Russell also lifted in her last meet as she finished in eighth place.
The boy’s powerlifting team sent one to state. While Robert Zambrano failed to place after not completing all three of his lifts, it was still a great accomplishment.
The next big thing was the Bowie golf program continuing to be great. The Lady Rabbits team finished second at district and qualified for the regional meet where they placed 10th overall.
The boy’s golf team made it back to the state tournament for the second straight year and repeated getting a bronze medal in the 3A classification. The last two years are the best finishes in program history.
In track and field, Bowie had one athlete make it back to the state meet for his second straight year. Tucker Jones competed in the 110 meter hurdles in the 3A classification where he finished in eighth place in his final meet.
Other track athletes who did well were Tyler Richey and Case Curry competing at the regional meet in the pole vault finals, where Richey got fourth and Curry got seventh. Russell Anderson also ran in the 400 meter prelims.
To close out the spring season and the school year, the Bowie baseball team made it to the playoffs, earning the final playoff spot in the district. Unfortunately, the team bowed out to state-ranked Brock in the bi-district round of the playoffs to end the school year.
The fall season highlight was the boy’s cross country team finishing second and qualifying for the regional meet. The Jackrabbits were only six points away from qualifying for the state meet as a team.
Fortunately, Gold-Burg transfer Isaac Renteria was able to qualify for the 3A state meet where he finished 25th overall in his last cross country meet.
The final highlight for Bowie came in December when the Bowie High School Soccer Club had both the boy’s and girl’s teams play their first games.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
