The Nocona Lady Indians blew the doors off the gym against Hawley on Monday to open up their playoff run on the right note.
The Lady Indians beat the Lady Cats 84-39 in a one-sided beating they have been giving up routinely since they started district play.
Nocona first secured its seventh straight district title the previous week when it beat the only team that gave it any trouble during district play, Seymour, on Feb. 4.
The state-ranked Lady Panthers lost by single-digits the first time around and the second game was no different. The Lady Indians led 21-18 at halftime and actually trailed 29-28 heading into the final period. Nocona had Meg Meekins score 11 of the team’s 13 points as it took the lead and held on to win 41-38.
Meekins led the team with 27 points while Paige Davis was second with five points.
The win not only secured Nocona’s seventh straight district title, it was the sixth straight district title where the team had no losses, with the last loss coming in 2019.
Heading into Monday’s bi-district playoff game, the Lady Indians had a lot of confidence even if Hawley came in with 22 wins and had finished second in the district to a state-ranked Cisco team.
For the first three quarters Nocona showed no mercy. For a team that had outscored its district opponents by more than 550 points, the Lady Indians know how to not let off the gas pedal.
Nocona scored 25 points, 21 points and 24 points in the first three quarters all while not allowing the Lady Cats to score in the double-digits in any quarter.
Up 70-18 entering the fourth quarter, only then did the Lady Indians let off the gas as Coach Kyle Spitzer emptied his bench. More than half of Hawley’s scoring came in the final quarter as Nocona won 81-39.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
