FRIDAY NIGHT FINALS: Forestburg qualifies for playoffs

Forestburg’s J.D. Moore scored the go-ahead touchdown with 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the Longhorns defeated Woodson, 58-57, in a District 12-1A-II game at Cowboys Stadium in Woodson.
The Longhorns improved to 6-2 on the season, and they will play Throckmorton at home next Friday for the district title.
This was a see-saw game from the start.
Forestburg had a slim 8-6 lead after one quarter only to watch Woodson score 33 second-quarter points for a 39-23 advantage at intermission.
The Longhorns regained the lead after three quarters at 40-39.
“It was one of our goals since the season started,” Forestburg head coach Wayne Tuckwell said regarding the Longhorns making the playoffs. “We’ve accomplished that.”
Forestburg started 6-man football in 2007.
Ponder 24, Bowie 20
Bowie quarterback Trace Hardee, who was inserted into the game for Lawson Mickler, helped the Jackrabbit offense click.
Hardee connected with Chase Hall on a pair of TD passes, but it wasn’t enough as Bowie lost for the eighth straight game and was eliminated from the playoffs with this four-point loss at District 4-3A-I foe Ponder at Lion Stadium.
Bowie was up 20-18, but fumbled deep in its own territory and gave the ball back to Ponder.
On fourth-and-11, Ponder quarterback Brady Anderson hooked up with Jonathan Aguilar in the end zone on a go-ahead 17-yard TD pass.
Jesse Vaughn caught 78 yards in passes. Hardee finished the game 9-of-18 for 100 yards after Mickler threw a pair of interceptions.
Bowie is 1-8, 0-4 heading into its Nov. 7 finale versus Paradise. This will mark Senior Night for the Jackrabbits.
Eastland 45, Nocona 6
Ryder Nobile, who had to play quarterback when fellow senior Kyle Sentell went down with an injury, scored Nocona’s lone touchdown on a 39-yard run with 9 minutes, 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter as Eastland trounced the Indians in a District 2-3A-II game on Senior Night at Jack Crain Stadium.
Nocona dropped to 0-9, 0-6.
Eastland will play Cisco for the district title next week while Nocona travels to face Jacksboro.
The Mavericks rolled to a 38-0 halftime lead. Nocona played better in the second half, aided by a pair of onside kick recoveries and a couple more Eastland fumbles.
Newcastle 52, Saint Jo 6
Newcastle and Saint Jo were knotted at 6-all after one quarter of play, but then the Bobcats tallied 46 points in the second and third quarters for the District 9-1A-I victory.
Saint Jo dropped to 4-5, 0-2. Tioga’s 37-24 victory over Bryson knocked the Panthers out of playoff contention.
The Panthers will play at Bryson on Nov. 7 in the last game of the season.
Throckmorton 72, Gold-Burg 0
Throckmorton defeated Gold-Burg by the same score Forestburg did the week earlier as the Bears dropped to 2-7, 0-2 heading into the Nov. 7 season finale against Woodson at Joe Corpening Field in Stoneburg.

Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.
The Lady Indians took a quick lead but the Lady ‘Cats had too much in the tank and knocked Nocona out of the playoffs courtesy of a 13-3, five-inning victory winning the best of three series, 2-0.
Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.
Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
