Bowie girls play in hosted tournament
The Bowie Lady Rabbits had an up and down first tournament at their hosted Gayno Shleton’s Hoopin’ into the Holidays Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.
The Lady Rabbits went 1-3 overall during the two days, but every game was close and competitive.
Bowie was coming into the tournament following a close loss against Burkburnett the previous game.
The Lady Rabbits were first matched up with a good 2A Stamford team coached by previous Bowie coach Joe Crabb. It was a low scoring game and Bowie was able to keep the game close with some good defense. Unfortunately, the Lady Rabbits fell behind early and struggled to score against the Lady Bulldogs full-court trapping defense as they lost 35-29.
Bowie ended the first day on a positive with its win against Millsap. The Lady Rabbits were trailing 25-17 at halftime before turning things around in the second half, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 26-12. Bowie would win 43-37 to finish 1-1 after the first day.
The beginning of the second day saw the Lady Rabbits get a rematch against Burkburnett. It was a tale of two halves as the first half was a defensive struggle between both teams.
Neither team scored in double-figures in the first or second quarters and the Lady Bulldogs went into halftime leading 13-9.
Both teams came out of halftime on fire, more than doubling the first half total in the third quarter alone. Bowie outscored Burkburnett 22-20, which meant the Lady Rabbits were still trailing heading into the fourth quarter down 33-31.
The final period was not quite as frenetic as the third, with both teams scoring at a more normal pace. Unfortunately, the Lady Rabbits fell four points short of the Lady Bulldogs again like they did the previous week, losing 45-41.
Bowie’s final game of the tournament was against Graham. While the Lady Rabbits had spouts of limited success offensively during the tournament and earl this season, it kept up for the entirety against the Lady Blues.
Luckily, Bowie’s defense kept the game close as it was a defensive slog for both teams as points were hard to come by. Graham led 17-13 at halftime.
Unfortunately, the Lady Rabbits could never get anything going despite also holding the Lady Blues to only 13 points in the second half.
Graham won the dogfight 30-26 to end Bowie’s tournament.

Already millions of people have greeted the Olympic flame on its journey around France with a huge wave of enthusiasm. All of us are looking forward to an unforgettable celebration of Olympic sport and French culture in the coming weeks.

Saint Jo’s Firecracker 5K welcomed 100 runners for its 16th year on July 4th.
According to runsignup.com, Old Jo’s Firecracker 5K saw 100 runners of all ages register to kick off in downtown Saint Jo.
Brayden Willett, 14, Nocona, was the top male finisher with a time of 19:02.6. Sarah Rainey, 35, Saint Jo, was the top female finisher with 21:47.1.
In the male nine and under division, I. Miller, nine, Muenster, repeated his first place win from 2023 with at time of 34:52.8. E. Thomas, eight, no town listed, also repeated her win with a time of 31:58.5.
Emry Raney-Cavnar, 14, Ardmore, OK, won the male 10-14 group and E. Christensen, 11, Decatur, took the female race. In the male 15-19 division Luke Gehrig, 17, Muenster, won, while Sophia Christensen, 15, Decatur, took the ladies’ title.
