STORM CENTER COLUMN: Goon Squad makes game fun

Published

on

The sports editor would like to take this time to applaud the student cheering sections at all of the schools he covers.
The Bowie Goon Squad was in effect on Wednesday night at Denton High School.
According to the Team Bowie Twitter account, even the Goon squad was better than Pottsboro’s cheering section.
The Bowie boys’ basketball team defeated Pottsboro by 16; the Lady Rabbits topped the Lady Cardinals by 25, and the Goon Squad won by who knows how many points? Bazinga.
The Bowie student cheering section has stepped up its game, especially now that we are in the playoffs.
I’d also like to take time to applaud the rest of Bowie’s fans as well. It was heartwarming seeing Bowie had more than quadruple the fan support of Pottsboro during the games. That also might be a conservative estimate.
Now, it’s time to go back to the Goon Squad.
Did you realize there’s a connection between Bowie and Goon Squads. Well, there is.
In the early-1980s song by David Bowie titled, “Fashion,” there’s a line that sings like this, “We are the goon squad, and we’re coming to town.”
In the song, it states there’s a “brand new talk,” and well that’s what the goon squad provided the other night.

Editor’s Note: The Storm Center column is the expressed written views of sports editor Eric Viccaro and not The Bowie News.
