The Bowie High School baseball team opened the 2015 season with its own tournament.
The Rabbits played five games over the past weekend, and put together a 3-1-1 record.
“They just tried to put too much on themselves,” said coach Ryan Rogers of the first game, a 4-3 loss to Decatur. “There were jitters in that first game.”
Despite Bowie leading 7-3 in the hit category, Decatur never relinquished their lead after scoring two runs in the first inning.
Bowie took on Covenant Christian out of Colleyville in their next game, resulting in the rare tie because of time constraints.
“We did a good job coming from behind to tie it,” said Rogers. “That was sort of the theme of the weekend.”
With Bowie down 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, Carter Shackelford rose to the occasion, belting a two-run home run with two outs. Coby Bentley pitched the first five innings of the game, allowing one earned run and striking out eight.
Rogers said the two games earlier in the day settled the team for their final game of their Friday, a 2-0 win over Alvarado for the first victory of the season. Read more, and see complete boxscores, in the mid-week newspaper.
