Bowie baseball competes against tough competition
The Bowie Jackrabbits had a tough four games playing in Muenster’s tournament last week.
The Jackrabbits went 1-3 overall, though they played competitive and close games as they are set to start district play this week.
Bowie started the tournament playing the host team, Muenster. The Jackrabbits took the lead in the first inning 1-0 before the Hornets grabbed the lead in the second inning with two runs scored. Bowie tied the score 2-2 with one run in the third inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Muenster was able to get a base hit to end the game. The Hornets won 3-2.
Edmond De Leon and Rayder Mann each drove in one run each. De Leon pitched four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out 10 batters.
Bowie next played a state ranked 2A team in Axtell later in the day. The Jackrabbits did not start the game off well, giving up four runs in the first inning to start behind the eight ball.
Bowie regrouped to play good defense the rest of the way while scoring two runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the game at 4-4.
In the seventh inning, with the game needing to end so the tournament could stay on schedule, both teams started with a runner on second base to hopefully induce scoring. The Jackrabbits could not while the Longhorns came through with a single that brought the runner home to end the game. Axtell won 5-4.
Hayden Rodriguez led the team as he hit a two-run home run. De Leon and Mann also both drove in one run each. On the mound, Trae Seigler pitched five innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two batters.
The second day Bowie only played one game against Edgewood. With the Jackrabbits up 2-1 in the second inning, the Bulldogs pulled ahead by scoring four runs. Edgewood added two more runs in the fourth inning as it pulled ahead. Bowie’s offense had no answer as the game ended after five and half innings, the Bulldogs winning 7-2.
Both of the Jackrabbits runs were scored on fielding errors, scored by Caden Belcher and De Leon.
Bowie was able to come back on the final day and end the tournament on a good note playing state-ranked team Howe. The Bulldogs got the lead in the first inning with one run and kept that lead until they added to it in the sixth inning with one more run.
The Jackrabbits rallied to scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Howe answered with one run in the final inning, but could not tie or take the lead as Bowie held on to win 4-3.
Boston Farris, Austin Cheney and Belcher each drove in one run each. Farris also got the start on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five and walking four. Bowie’s defense committed four fielding errors.
